'Once a catholic . . . ' - always a catholic. Perhaps Catholicism is a mild form of surrealism and if one studies the lives of the surrealists one might find that one of the prerequisites of the successful surrealist is to be a renegade catholic. Surrealism is existentialism's wayward younger brother.

Every serious artist founds his own religion
This is faith at its purest
The High Priest is the artist
The workspace is the altar and the process is the liturgy
There is no dogma, no morality, no hypocrisy, no good and evil,
Nor right or wrong, no saints and sinners, no martyrs, no sacrificial lamb
And no apostles or disciples nor followers of any kind
Except perhaps (if one is lucky) a few devotees in the choir
O come all ye faithless!
